After recently completing a busy Monday and Tuesday, how lovely to spend a mid-week afternoon tasting Champagne from Paul Bara, one of my favourite grower producers. These wines never fail to captivate me with their characteristic fruitiness and perfect balance of richness and grace.
We were joined by Paul-Antoine Dauvergne to taste through a flight of truly exceptional wines. Here are the highlights:
Champagne Paul Bara Brut Réserve NV
A fresh and lively blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay from 35 year old vines. Rich aromatics are followed by a long, elegant palate infused with brioche, orange zest and honey baked lemon. Elegant and beautifully balanced.
Champagne Paul Bara Grand Rosé NV
Made with 68% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay and 12% of the estate’s Bouzy Rouge.
Beautiful salmon-pink colour with fine mousse. Refreshing acidity is seamlessly fused with crunchy red fruit, baked bread and almond. Charming and precise.
Champagne Paul Bara Millésime 2007
Just disgorged. 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay.
Expressive nose of biscuit, lemon and vanilla. The palate shows bright acidity with much more texture and weight than previous wines. Flavours of brioche, vanilla, baked almond and apple and incredible length.
Champagne Paul Bara Special Club Blanc 2005
The Special Club Champagne or Club Tresors de Champagne is a collection of 27 grower producers who all share the common goal of promoting the expression of terroir in the region. There is a strict criteria for which wines are put into these bottles and each bottle is meant to be at the cuvee prestige level of their respective Champagne house.
The 2005 Special Club Blanc is made from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from 40 year old vines. Pronounced aromas of framboise, vanilla, honey, baked apple and bread dough. The palate is the perfect blend of density and lightness with creamy, mouth-filling texture and flavours of red fruit, marzipan, biscuit and exotic spice on the finish. Lives up to Special club status.
Champagne Paul Bara Comtesse Marie de France 2004
100% Pinot Noir
Fine mousse with persistent bubbles. The nose is intoxicating – aromas of blossom, quince, orange zest, marzipan and freshly baked bread. The palate is rich and mouth-filling with soft flesh and flavours of baked apple, vanilla, brioche, ripe pear and toasted nuts. Opulent and expressive.
Bouzy Rouge 2004
Only 2000 bottles per year are made of this modest little Pinot Noir. The nose screams of strawberry, raspberry and wild herbs. The palate is vibrant with energetic acidity and soft tannins. Flavours of pure cherry, raspberry, liquid minerals and pepper are surprisingly long lasting in the mouth. Delicious, interesting and worthy of a place at your dinner table.
