299 Points Wines

It's not often that you get the opportunity to taste 299 points of wines in one sitting, but last Thursday we got to do just that. Dimitri Mesnard, from Jackson Wine Estates, dropped into our offices to present Verité's spectacular 2008s, along with 2008 Lokoya, 2008 Cardinale and chief winemaker, Pierre Siellan's wines from Chateau Lassegue in St Emillon and Tenuta di Arceno Arcanum from Tuscany. It wasn't a bad way to while away the afternoon!

As is usually the case I like to write down a few tasting notes to keep a record of particularly special wines, which I've shared below:

2004 Lassegue " From a site which shares the same terroirs as Angelus. Ripe plums, leather, meaty aromas with a hint of spice and smoke. Layers of cooked fruits, vanilla and game on the palate. Firm tannins, balanced by acidity. Really delicious." 17.5 points FINE+RARE 2009 Lassegue " Much riper black fruits than 2004, but still showing complex layers of game and savoury spice. The nose is replicated on the palate with tannins which are still quite tight, but there is definitely potential in the long term. The finish is long and fruity." 17 Points FINE+RARE 2007 Tenuta di Arceno Arcanum " Complex aromas of violets, blackcurrants, black cherries and cedar. Concentrated ripe fruits on the palate accentuated by vanilla and oak notes. The tannins are still quite firm, but the overall impression is very elegant." 17 Points FINE+RARE 2008 Verite La Muse "A blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec, La Muse is inspired by Pomerol. Initially the nose was very reserved, but slowly opened up like a rose in bloom to reveal an inviting floral perfume, rich plums and a strong backbone of cedar. Lingering spiced plum finish on the palate which you want to keep going on and on. Superb ageing potential." 19 Points FINE+RARE 2008 Verite Le Desir "61% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec go into the blend for Le Desir, which is inspired by the best wines from St Emillon. Layers of sweet spice, plums, black fruits. Superb structure, balanced acidity. Delicious notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla with rich plums and black cherries make you keep on coming back for more. Dense, pure, sweet liqueur fruit lingers on the finish." 18.5 Points FINE+RARE 2008 Verite La Joie "A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec goes into the Pauillac-esque La Joie. Hints of smoke, sweet spice, violets and roses on the nose. Rich, concentrated black fruits on the palate, with notes of eucalyptus, black pepper and nutmeg adding complexity. A seriously special wine." 19 Points FINE+RARE 2008 La Jota "Provencal aromas of lavender, rosemary together with cassis and black cherries. Superb structure, balanced acidity. Strong and powerful with warmth on the throat coming from high level of alcohol. But very drinkable indeed despite the young age!" 17.5 Points FINE+RARE 2008 Cardinale "A modern version of a Napa Valley wine. A delicious rich nose nose of plum liqueur, christmas cake spice and violets. The acidity is still quite high but this adds a freshness to the wine. Very American style of wine - rich black fruits, vanilla and a touch of tobacco on the palate." 18 Points FINE+RARE 2008 Lokoya "Made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Chocolate, coffee, rich fruits and an underlying note of game on the nose. Chewy tannins are balanced by the acidity. Delicious cooked blackcurrants with a core of sweet spice, complemented by hints of blackcurrant leaf and eucalyptus. A very elegant wine." 18 Points FINE+RARE An offer is to come soon but feel free to contact wine@frw.co.uk for information on any of the wines mentioned here.
