When to age a red wine
Wine lovers building their first cellar may wish to take the advice of Anthony Gismondi, who recently expanded on the best ways to age a bottle.

Writing in the Pique News Magazine, Mr Gismondi said for red wines, seven to ten years is a good general rule of thumb, as this period of time allows the fruit tannin, acid and oak to blend together into a more complex flavour.

However, when deciding whether or not to age, price is often the guide - wines priced under $15 (£10) are rarely designed for ageing, although this is not to say they will not benefit from a spell in the cellar.

Wines that certainly will improve with age include Domaine de Beaurenard Chateauneuf-du-Pape Boisrenard Rouge 2007 (10-15 years) and Perrin Vacqueyras Les Christins Cotes du Rhone 2007 (10-20 years), Mr Gismondi writes.

On the subject of wine cellars, thewinedoctor.com advises a wrap of cling film around the labels of particularly precious bottles in order to protect them from the elements.
