Sotheby's auction sees Bordeaux lots returned

The Asian market for Bordeaux and Burgundy is stabilising, according to Sotheby's.

Signs that the Asian wine market is beginning to stabilise have again been seen at a Hong Kong auction.

The latest Sotheby's sale in the region saw 59 of the 821 lots of top Bordeaux and Burgundy wines go unsold, including cases of Chateau Lafite Rothschild from 1961, 1995, 2000 and 2005.

It is the first time that any lots have been returned since Sotheby's entered Hong Kong in 2009, but the firm's worldwide head of wine Serena Sutcliffe described it as a "healthy stabilisation".

"The results can be seen as a natural evolution of the market as bidders understand more about wine and how it trades," she told Decanter.

"Second Growths are becoming increasingly popular in Asia as knowledge of different chateaux broadens."

The latest figures from the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux have shown that Hong Kong and China now account for 60 per cent of the region's wine exports.
