Chateau Lafite Rothschild is making a bold move to position itself as the unofficial favourite of Asian wine buyers.
As the Asian market for fine wines continues to thrive, the top chateaux are beginning to sell directly to Asian oenophiles, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Now Chateau Lafite Rothschild is looking to seize the initiative by selling 2,000 bottles of its finest produce at Sotheby's in Hong Kong.
While this would be a large sale for any chateau, these wines are coming from Lafite's private cellar, with vintages that span 139 years of winemaking.
"An auction that features only one property, in this case Lafite, certainly focuses collectors' attention on the chateau," Jamie Ritchie, auctioneer and head of America's wine department for Sotheby's, told the publication.
A recent Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong saw wine enthusiasts in the region broadening their interest from Bordeaux to include Burgundy wines, such as Domaine Romanee Conti.
