Ornellaia sale raises $45k for US art
Some $45,000 (£31,400) has been raised for the Whitney Museum of American Art through the sale of a Salmanazar, or nine-litre bottle, of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in New York.
Sotheby's held the charity auction as part of a project launched by the Super Tuscan estate, under which it plans to revive its patronage of the arts - something that was underlined by the hand-painted cloth label on the bottle, decanter.com reports.
"We have a permanent art curator at Ornellaia and together we choose artists whose work share characteristics with the year's vintage," Ornellaia's Andrea Orsini told the website.
Four Imperials and 18 Double Magnums of Ornellaia were also sold, comprising some of the 127 bottles adorned with unique labels designed for the inaugural auction last year.
It follows news that a Christie's auction earlier this month featured a six-bottle case of Hermitage La Chapelle 1961, which sold for a record-breaking £66,350.
