London photo exhibition to profile the best of Champagne and Burgundy

A new photographic exhibition in London will give wine enthusiasts a glimpse into the lives of the leading Burgundy and Champagne vintners.

Following a highly positive reception to The Greatest Winemakers, a show which comprised 20 pictures of Bordeaux's top producers, Colin Hampden-White switched his attentions to France's other famous wine regions in the last year.

A total of 21 images will feature in the show, including portraits of Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger and Dom Perignon chef de cave Richard Geoffroy.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti co-owner Aubert de Villaine naturally features in the Burgundy portraits, as does Domaine Leflaive boss Anne-Claude Leflaive.

The pictures will be exhibited this spring at the Rebecca Hossack gallery on Fitzroy Square.

While admitting it would have made better business sense to do two separate exhibitions for Champagne and Burgundy, the expert decided stretching each region to 20 names was impacting on the concept.

"The whole idea is the greatest winemakers in the world and every time I got beyond 15 I found that the notoriety was dwindling," he told the Drinks Business.

Mr Hampden-White explained prioritising who deserved to make the grade was easing, commenting: "The methodology is the same [as the last exhibition] – I got merchants, friends and a couple of wine writers to note down what were their top 20 and then I saw which names came up the most frequently."

However, 20 became 21 when he decided to add Anselme Selosse as his eleventh Champagne personality.

"I had a core ten that were obvious, but then his name kept coming up, and considering his maverick nature and different style of winemaking, I decided to include him and do 11 from Champagne."

Many of those influential Champagne figures are looking to make inroads in the BRIC (Brazil, India, Russia and China) markets in 2012, according to the Drinks business, seeing these as good opportunities to increase sales revenue.
