Wine critics have declared that Pontet-Canet is the best-value label from the 2001 Bordeaux vintage.
Well-known writers gathered to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the release of 2001 Bordeaux, to review how the wines have developed after ten years of cellaring, the Drinks Business reports.
Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Petrus were named the joint-best wines from the vintage, while Chateau d'Yquem joined Chateau Mouton Rothschild in joint-fourth.
However, the Pontet-Canet was deemed to be the best value of the 2001s, which have suffered from being in the shadow of the excellent produce from 2000.
Wine critic Jancis Robinson, who attended the event, wrote on her Purple Pages website that the 2001 bottles were not as impressive as those from the previous year, but they were still "nicely balanced and pretty impressive at this stage in their development".
Another vintage that is said to have been unfairly overlooked is 2008 Burgundy.
Jean-Claude Boisset's winemaker Gregory Patriat recently suggested that it is an "outstanding vintage".
