Consolidation the key for Chablis

Growers in the Burgundy region of Chablis are looking to hold what they have with the 2010 vintage.

President of the Union des Grands Crus de Chablis Louis Moreau told the Drinks Business that in years when yields are small it is important to ensure that loyal clientele are prioritised.

"In years like this you just don't develop other markets and you hope for a return to normal levels the next year and luckily that is what happened with the 2011 vintage," he explained.

One of the key markets for Chablis will once again be the UK, with sales now almost matching those in France.

Mr Moreau said that Chablis' crus continue to perform strongly, particularly in the on-trade, and says that the region has a "need" to maintain a presence in the UK market.

Wine critic Sarah March recently suggested that the Chablis wines are some of the best to have been produced from the 2010 vintage.
