The Chinese government's acquisition of Bordeaux estate Chateau de Viaud through its Cofco firm has been described as a major opportunity for the rest of the region.
Seller Philippe Raoux, who also owns Chateau d'Arsac, insists that this could provide some much-needed impetus for the stagnating vineyards in Bordeaux, Wine Spectator reports.
"Bordeaux is broken down, except for the top grands crus classes. This is a lucky chance for Bordeaux. They should buy several chateaux," he told the publication.
Georges Haushalter, a negociant and president of the Bordeaux wine councils, added that foreign investors with an enthusiasm for fine wine have always been welcomed in the region, and the deal will only benefit other growers in the area.
Announcing the sale last month, Mr Raoux revealed that the deal to sell the vineyard has been in the pipeline for more than three years as part of a larger collaborative agreement between the two parties.
