Chris Thile on Bordeaux and Burgundy

Chris Thile may be better-known for his folk music talents than his wine expertise, but the former Nickel Creek mandolinist has revealed that he is often plied with Krug and Chassagne Montrachet while on tour.

In an interview with Wine Spectator, Mr Thile said that last year he played a concert at Blackberry Farms, a venue known for its selection of some 6,000 wines.

"Sam Beall, the proprietor, started us off with magnums of '79 Krug and then we went to great old vintages of Chassagne Montrachet," he told the publication.

Later in the evening, the 29-year-old was served with a 1963 Bordeaux before moving on to "some incredible Burgundies … perfectly preserved, not a trace of vinegar".

However, one of the most memorable wines he has ever tasted remains a Harlan Estate Cab from 1995, which he recalls as a "great wine coupled with momentous social experience".

Mr Thile's current band Punch Brothers released their second album, Antifogmatic, in June this year.
