Chinese businessman buys Bordeaux property

Chinese jewellery magnate Richard Shen Dongjun has acquired a property in Bordeaux, adding yet more weight to a boom of Chinese investment in the region.

The 42-year-old visited 40 vineyards before purchasing Chateau Laulan Ducos, Agence France-Presse reports.

"I wanted to understand the entire process of producing wine - not just the commercialisation of wine - in order to develop the market," Mr Shen told the news provider.

All 150,000 bottles from the chateau will be shipped to China directly, with redesigned packaging to appeal to the Asian market.

"It sounds to be a very savvy purchase from a potentially major Chinese player," said wine merchant Francis Anson.

"It's remarkably well planned, and part of a larger strategy."

The purchase comes shortly after Chinese state-owned conglomerate Cofco bought Chateau de Viaud in Bordeaux, also pledging to control the supply chain of its wines in a bid to protect consumers from wine fraud.
