Champagne and Mouton Rothschild marks Broadbent milestone

A veteran wine journalist has reached a milestone in his career, which was appropriately celebrated with Champagne Pol Roger, Corton Charlemagne and a very special Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982.

Michael Broadbent, 83, recently completed his 400th column for wine publication Decanter and was rewarded with a spectacular wine list assembled by the magazine's publishing director Sarah Kemp.

In addition to the champagne and Mouton Rothschild, the festivities featured Bonneau du Martray 2003, Chateau Climens 1971 and Graham's Port 1970 to finish.

"I can't say which was the best wine," Freddie Price, one of Mr Broadbent's oldest friends, told Decanter.

"They were all so completely appropriate to whatever was served."

Yorkshireman Michael Broadbent began his wine career at the age of 25 and worked with a number of merchants before joining the wine department at Christie's auction house.

He received the qualification of Master of Wine in 1960 and is estimated to have tasted more than 90,000 fine wines over his long career.
