Bordeaux vintners thinking of making wine organically need to totally re-think their production techniques, it has been claimed.
Chateau Pontet Canet in Pauillac, Bordeaux is one of two estates in the region to recently be given official organic certification.
The vineyard manager Jean Michel Comme told Agence France-Presse that this accreditation was essential, as it disproved the old belief that Bordeaux wine could not be grown organically.
Since Pontet Canet and Chateau Guiraud received their organic status, many others have expressed an interest in following suit, the news provider notes.
However, Mr Comme said that vintners must think carefully before committing to biodynamic growing.
"People think they are going to go organic but keep the same industrial production philosophy. That doesn't work. You have to change the approach," he said.
While Bordeaux ponders its environmental future, New Zealand has made a firm commitment to organic growing.
Organic Winegrowers New Zealand wants to ensure that 20 per cent of the country's vineyards are organic by 2020.
