Barolo producer dies, aged 78
A pioneer of Italian wine and producer of some of the world's best-loved Barolo has died at the age of 78.

Alfred Currado, who owned the Vietti estate in Barolo, died late last month after spending more than a decade living with Parkinson's disease.

He began his career in 1960 after taking over his father-in-law's business, shortly afterwards becoming the first Piedmontese vintner to bottle Nebbiolo with a single-vineyard designation.

Mr Currado is also credited with the revival of the Arneis variety of white grape, which was on the verge of obscurity before he began producing wine with it in 1967.

"One of his longstanding goals, even after retirement, was to continue to transmit his knowledge about our wines and territory to be appreciated by the rest of the world," Winespectator.com reports his son Luca Currado as saying.

The Vietti winery traces its roots to the 19th century and became famous in 1919, when Mario Vietti began bottling branded wine.
