The 2015 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Golden Capsule) opens with a clear, crazy deep, intense and complex bouquet of tropical flavors but most of all smoky aromas of a rocky mountain massive. On the palate, this is a rich, complex, highly finessed, piquant and refreshing Spätlese with concentrated fruit and a tight, persistent structure. The finish is dangerously attractive, but this Sonnenuhr will always be ticking; it should have spectacular aging potential! Apr 2017, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2030-2070
High-toned aromatic evocations of apple and pear are joined by hints of banana oil and quince preserves, pointing toward advanced and possibly very subtly ennobled ripeness (although Molitor insisted that this fruit was “healthy”). A garland of honeysuckle and heliotrope adds further allure. Site-typical vanilla mingles with marzipan and hazelnut paste to lend the ripely fruited, lush, glycerol-slicked palate a confectionary aura, an impression reinforced by more obvious sweetness than exhibited by any wine that led up to it in the present collection. The finish is compellingly persistent, albeit almost gaudy. Jun 2017, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2017-2032
A big mouthful of cooked peach with a citrus freshness. Sweetness adds to the impression of weight and high acidity lifts the finish beautifully. Jun 2017, www.jamessuckling.com
