La Rioja Alta produces benchmark, classical Rioja. Their Viña Ardanza Reserva is their standard-bearer – offering amazing quality and value. The 2015 – a blend of 78% Tempranillo with 22% Garnacha – is a splendid rendition from a strong vintage. The Tempranillo spent three years in old oak, while the Garnacha spent 30 months in barrel prior to blending and bottling. All the classic hallmarks that make this wine so popular are there in abundance – plush fruit, smooth chocolatey oak, attractive sweet spice, satisfying body and length, with balancing freshness. The bouquet is lovely and alive with red cherry, blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with slight tar and smoke notes, a hint of scorched herbs, lots of luxurious chocolate and that touch of characteristic coconut, with fresh, crushed stone and liquorice notes on the finish. The tannins are supple and beautifully resolved on the palate, and the structure of this easy yet poised Rioja is maintained through the long finish with fresh acidity. Peppery spice balances the sweet fruit and smooth chocolate flavours that carry through to the finish. Lovely. Drinking well now, it will age for another decade or more.
