The 2021 Vieux Château Mazerat comes from vines around the new château, just beside Angélus, and is based on 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It brings good richness and depth on the palate, with spicy, chocolate, and subtle oak as well as red and black fruits. It's beautifully done and is going to have 15+ years of prime drinking.

The 2021 Vieux Château Mazerat is a sleek, racy wine. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, spice and espresso all meld together effortlessly. A wine with no hard edges and terrific balance, Vieux Château Mazerat is seriously impressive in this tasting.

Flowers, black raspberries, vanilla cream, licorice, black plum, and a hint of orange blossom on the nose. The palate, is fresh, soft and supple with silky tannins and a vibrancy to the red fruits with a savory edge. You also find a nice touch of minerality in the finish. The wine blends 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc.

The 2021 Vieux Chateau Mazerat is made from 90% Merlot, picked 6, 7 and 11 October, and 10% Cabernet Franc, picked 11 and 14 October. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives up expressive scents of baked blackberries, plum preserves, and Morello cherries with hints of forest floor and tobacco. Medium-bodied, the palate offers a good amount of crunchy black fruits with appealing freshness and rounded tannins, finishing fragrant. The pH is 3.64.

Bright but cool blueberry and redcurrant fruit, carved precision to the flavours, given concentration and depth by cocoa bean, liquorice, campfire smoke. 3.64ph, great quality. First year in new cellars. No chaptilisation.

Spices and floral notes on the nose, cedar touches, sweet violets. Smooth and sleek but rich and concentrated, softly chewy, this has an intensity and linearity to it - precise and detailed - but also some weight and structure. It’s not expansive in terms of being mouthfilling but has layers and waves of flavour that give ample appeal. I love the crushed stone, the mint and the liquorice giving freshness and also an aerial aspect. A great balance between richness and delicacy. Good persistency and drinkability with the plumpness on the mid-palate that some are missing. Charming, cool liquorice note on the finish. Overall, well worked and judged. More Merlot than usual at 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc (usually 35%).

The 2021 Vieux Château Mazerat offers up aromas of blackberries, cherries, violets and dark chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated palate that's impressively velvety and floral. Whether it's the vintage or a stylistic evolution is hard to say, but this is the most structurally refined rendition of this cuvée that I can remember tasting.
