Jean-Bernard Chambard has crafted a decent if not spectacular 2016 Roylland. It has a light marine influence on the nose that infuses the blackberry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine line of acidity but just needs the killer punch on the finish that some of the top 2016 Saint Emilion's possess. The 2016 Roylland is bright and nicely focused, especially in its aromatics, but less interesting on the palate, where the fruit lacks depth. If the 2016 fleshes out a bit more during its aging, it may merit a more positive note. Tasted two times. Apr 2017, www.vinous.com
Very sweet and a little stewed. Tough dry tannins on the end. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2023-2030
