Critic Notes

The 2004 Riesling Frederic Emile needs time to open up; it is very intense and concentrated with spicy minerals, great purity and lemon flavors. Intense, round and mineral on the palate, this is a very fresh and mineral dry Riesling with structure and lots of salt, great purity, and with more finesse and purity than the corresponding Clos Ste Hune. The finish is long, fresh and very salty and reveals a lot of grip. Great wine. Oct 2015, www.robertparker.com

Wonderful! Instant charm and complexity. Mature, honey, orange peel, cheese, spice - but a very slight oxidative note on the finish, so not for keeping much further? Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com

Grapefruit zest, chalk dust, truffle, sassafras and must inform the nose of the 2004 Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile. Overtly chalky and palpably extract-rich, with illusive floral inner-mouth aromas, this penetrates with almost severe intensity, leaving the palate saturated with citrus and minerals and, frankly, a bit wrung-out. Don’t look for this wine to rebound for another couple of years –in fact, don’t look for it at all until 2009, when it will be released. The 2005 will almost certainly continue to taste better younger. David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate February 2008

Frederic Magnien, a well-known winemaker on the Cote d’Or, sources grapes throughout the region in order to make single-vineyard wines, which currently total 44 separate cuvees. "A Wine That Makes You Smile": A Gem Discovered on our Trip to Montalcino
Before the prose: this is one of the best wines I have tasted this year. A wine with energy, a wine with bounce, a wine that makes you smile. We tasted it against a Brunello and a Brunello Riserva and it trounced them both. As luck would have it we found a bottle - not on the list – at ...
