Critic Notes

A great effort and a showcase for Cabernet Franc is the 2012 Rapszodia. This is a blend of 90% Cabernet Franc from the heavy clay soils of their vineyard blended with 10% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months and bottled without filtration. A stunning nose of acacia flowers, blueberry liqueur and blackberry is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine that’s amazingly intense, rich and concentrated, but surprisingly light on its feet weight-wise. The wine is full-bodied, but stunningly ethereal and sublime. This is a stunner, and a great example of what Cabernet Franc can do from a terrific terroir, great winemaking and élevage. Sadly, only 175 cases were produced. Look for this wine to continue to drink well for up to two decades. Oct 2015, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2015-2035

Extremely subtle aromas with stone, blackberry and fresh mushroom. Full body, very silky. Stone and chocolate. Cool fruit; lots of blue fruits here. Fabulous length and softness. Mostly cabernet franc with a tiny amount of merlot. Gorgeous now, but wait and see. May 2016, www.jamessuckling.com

The 2012 Rapszodia speaks to finesse above all else. In this vintage, the Cabernet Franc is the highest ever (90%), which gives the wine much of its aromatic freshness, nuance and delineation. Sublime and finely-knit in the glass, the 2012 is a strikingly beautiful wine from the team at Kapcsándy. The blend is 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. Oct 2015, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2017-2032

Kapcsandy's Roberta Reserve - Behind the Bottle
“...could easily eclipse a great vintage of Petrus in a blind tasting.” Robert Parker (on the 2013 Roberta Reserve) Kapcsandy Estate was set up by the extraordinary Lou Kapcsandy, a man who has lived an eventful life prior to becoming one of Napa’s modern-day superstars. At just 17 years of age he fled Hungary during the Communist Revolution of 1956. ...

Napa Valley 2016 & 2017 Vintage Insights
The 2016 Vintage 2016 was undoubtedly a sensational vintage in Napa. Whilst it was the 5th warm vintage in a row, the season had a very wet start, so it was the first vintage in Napa since 2011 not classified as a drought vintage. For many, this brought more finesse to the tannins, more minerality and more balance to the ...

Designing It Differently: Five Unique Wineries
Great wineries come in many guises. Cutting-edge, contemporary architecture always turns heads, creating monoliths to winemaking on the landscape. Yet there are also plenty of more understated design features incorporated into chateau cellars that deserve a moment in the spotlight - whether to celebrate their technical innovation, unconventional use of raw materials or even conservation of tradition. From the show-stopping to the subtle, we take a look ...
