The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru, also matured in 20% new wood, has a very focused and clinical bouquet with superb minerality for the vintage. The palate is vibrant with orange cordial, lime and a touch of quince, fanning out wonderfully on the tensile finish. This is another superb 2013 from Jacques Carillon in the making. ||I have to confess, four minutes before my 1 p.m. appointment at Jacques Carillon in the village of Puligny, I was sitting in the car park up the road in Volnay relishing a rare and unexpected gap in my itinerary. Just as I was preparing my power nap, I realized that I had forgotten to change my watch. One expletive later and I am making like Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton down the RN74 as far as my VW Polo will drive me (within the speed limit) for this is one appointment I did not want to miss since Jacques is on a roll at the moment. I arrive just on time. Like last year, I tasted his latest vintage directly from tank, a concise portfolio of six wines that cover just 5.25 hectare in total, sufficient time to taste through his bottled 2012s as well (these will be included in a separate report in a later issue earlier next year.) Jacques told me that he picked on September 28 for 5½ days, commencing with the premier crus, then the grand and village crus. The cold inclement spring meant that there is less wine that normal, although August was fine and Jacques specifically pointed out that the cool nights in September helped lock in the acidity (pH level coming in around 3.05 to 3.10.) Like everywhere else, the malolactic fermentation was dragged out, here not completed until harvest 2014. |I was knocked-out by the quality of Jacques’s 2013s, one of the Côte de Beaune growers who may have made even better wines in 2013 than in 2012. They are all imbued with bracing acidity, crisp delineation and a compelling sense of energy and tension – pure expressions of their respect terroirs. These were some of my favorite white 2013s.
