Critic Notes

From 32-year-old vines in a steep, west to northwest facing slope with 300-350 meters in altitude, the 2013 Pinot Gris Rotenberg is marked by very meager, iron-rich limestone soils with 45% active chalk in which it is cultivated. "You don't need a knife to reduce yields here, as they are low by nature," says Humbrecht, who considers the Wintzenheim Rotenberg not only as a top terroir for Vendanges Tardives and Selections de Grains Nobles, but also for dry Pinot Gris due to the low yields. "You just have to take care about the ripeness. 1% more alcohol means four or five times more sugar," he says. The 2014 was bottled in March 2015 with 14% alcohol and 5.3 grams of residual sugar and opens with a clear, deep, steely-elegant and intense limestone bouquet with fascinating aromas of lemon zests, Mediterranean herbs and crushed chalk. Full-bodied yet lean, gorgeously fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a very intense and persistently mineral, tension-filled, and salty Pinot of great purity and complexity. Very long and lingering in its salinity. Burgundy seems not far from here. Oct 2015, www.robertparker.com

With a particular focus on the Heimbourg Gewurztraminer, the ...

Brunello di Montalcino – The Young Minds of Montalcino
Trying to reach Sangiovese’s true potential in Montalcino Sangiovese, like Pinot Noir, is very much susceptible to over-cropping and in recent years has been used and abused by many winemakers to the detriment of its true varietal profile. Sangiovese has the potential to produce wines with the same textural brilliance as some of the world’s best Pinot Noir; it can ...
