Critic Notes

Brilliantly concentrated from beginning to end. oozing with black cherry, currant, plum and anise aromas and flavors that are focused and elegant on the long finish. The tannins are sufficiently integrated to make it drinkable now with hearty food, but it's tough enough to need until 1996 to 2000 to settle down. 4,500 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1991

Score: 94-/100Wine Spectator

The 1988 Pavie-Decesse has fine concentration, good length, an enticing bouquet of earthy, mineral, and exotic fruit, but tremendous tannin in the finish. Cellaring is most definitely needed. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2009. Wine Advocate.February, 1993

Château Ausone: The Ethereal Estate of Saint-Émilion
Visiting Chateau Ausone during En Primeur Week, we were fortunate enough to spend some time with owner Alain Vauthier and his son Edouard (who has grown up working at the Chateau) to discuss the changes afoot at Saint-Emilion’s most prestigious address. Chateau Ausone has, without question, been producing some of the finest wines in the world for many decades, but ...

So said Rhone expert Jeb Dunnuck on release of the 2016 vintage. The names Isabel Ferrando and Saint Prefert have indeed become synonymous with Southern Rhone of the highest ...

2014 Bordeaux: GPL, Feytit-Clinet and the Perse selection
Yesterday afternoon saw the release of 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste.  This was one of our favourite wines of the vintage, and at GBP 375 per dozen in bond it looks good, though one can buy the 2008 and the 2006 for a similar sum.  Whatever one might think of the price, the wine is excellent: pure Pauillac, complete and fresh. This morning sees ...

How to Spend 24 Hours in Santa Barbara
The Santa Barbara Hills in Southern California (situated just north of LA, beyond Malibu) are currently producing some of the most exciting wines in the whole of California. Whilst less established than Napa Valley or Sonoma further North, this wilder territory has attracted a young generation of winemakers who are not scared to experiment. Just a few decades since the ...
