Tasted 9 Times With Consistent Notes||The 1961 Palmer has long been considered to be a legend from this vintage, and its reputation is well-deserved. The wine is at its apogee, with an extraordinary, sweet, complex nose with aromas of flowers, cassis, toast, and minerals. It is intensely concentrated, offering a cascade of lavishly ripe, full-bodied, opulent fruit, soft tannins, and a voluptuous finish. This is a decadent Palmer, unparalleled since in quality with the exception of 1983 and 1989.|| Wine Advocate.October, 1994
The Palmer ’61 has that quite astonishing nose that is exactly the same as the bottle opened at the Circle of Wine Writers. It unfurls with every passing moment: Heaven-sent red-berried fruits, crushed stone, a touch of decayed rose petals all with outstanding delineation, although there is a sense of fragility that is becoming more obvious with age. The palate is of ethereal balance with great freshness and complexity, a more textural pleasure than flavour, although once again, the finish is not quite as well-knit as previous bottles. Tasted April 2011. Neal Martin,
Sweet and jewelly – wonderfully fragrant and seductive on the nose though just starting to dry out on the finish. Bordeaux as burgundy? Floral and broad on the mid palate with some dry tannins on the finish but great scent, as always. Jancis Robinson,
Tasted from magnum. Displays a broad palette of flavors that blend and enhance the elegant, lively texture and lingering finish. In a word, it has finesse. A mouth-watering example of Palmer that outshines châteaus with higher classifications.--1961 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now through 2005.
