(30% vendange entier; one vat went into 50% new oak, the other 20%): Healthy dark red. Deep, reduced aromas of redcurrant, iron, smoke and mint; this needs oxygen! Very dry and broad on the palate, offering superb mouth coverage and volume but an almost weightless impression. Best today on the lively, tactile, firmly tannic finish, which perfumes the mouth with ethereal spices and flowers. Liger-Belair, who has been leading the effort to have Les Saint-Georges elevated to grand cru status, believes he's now getting more elegance, "more verticality," to go with the power of this cru. Jan 2016,
Strikingly floral-inflected aromas display lovely purity and freshness on the wild red berry, warm earth-scented nose. There is good richness and excellent intensity to the compact, concentrated and stony medium weight plus flavors that possess a firm core of ripe tannins on the wonderfully long, linear and powerful finish. Like the Clos de Vougeot this is indisputably built-to-age and is definitely going to need at least a decade's worth of cellaring. Jan 2016,, Drink: 2029+
The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les St Georges has a well defined bouquet, reserved at first but unfurling with wild strawberry and redcurrant fruit infused with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied and strict, and there is a touch of spice here, although I would like to see more fleshy red fruit come through on the finish. Maybe tightening up with the winter coming? Let's see. Nov 2015,, Drink: 2018-2032
