2015 Musar Red

Chateau Musar

flagBekaa Valley / Lebanon

The 2015 vintage was arguably Ch. Musar’s toughest on record. Hit badly by spring frosts, then hail and a summer drought, yields in some vineyards were down by 70%. What little was produced, however, is excellent and is further proof of this estate’s amazing resilience, producing great wine against the odds. The 2015 vintage is unmistakably Musar in its spicy, red-fruited and velvety tannin cloak, with an exotic, heady perfume and a particularly earthy, ripe, meaty character in this vintage. Ripe raspberries, plums, cherries and figs open up the nose, with leather, spice, sandalwood, cured meat and dusty earth notes alongside. With air the crunchier, fresher fruit spectrum of redcurrants, rosehip and pomegranate emerges. The palate is concentrated and dense, but there is balancing and tart freshness and the long finish is elegantly framed by those sumptuous, velvety tannins. Certainly one of the more “open for business” recent Musars, that we think will drink very well for the next five to eight years, but then Musar does have the tendency to take on a magical second life, so worth keeping some to revisit much later.
