LOCATION, TERROIR, APPELLATION, PRODUCTION…
Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is one of the most famous of the Bordeaux’s vineyard. It is based in the Commune of Pauillac to the north-west of Bordeaux on the edge of the Medoc peninsula. The estate comprises of 90 hectares in total. The vineyards are predominantly composed of Cabernet-Sauvignon which represent 80% of the plantings, followed by Merlot 16%, Cabernet Franc 3%, and Petit Verdot 1%. The soil is composed of a high density of gravel (stones and pebbles) which retain the heat of the sun. These gravelly soils extend down several metres over the clay-limestone creating ideal drainage properties for fine wine production, producing grapes with rich tannins, and elegant flavours. The Chateau on average produces 300,000 bottles per year.
PAST, HISTORY, IN THE CORRIDORS OF THE TIME…
Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought the Chateau Brane-Mouton in 1853. The vineyard changed its name at this time and became Mouton Rothschild. Despite the market price of the wines equalling Chateau Lafite at the time of the 1855 classification it was excluded from first growth status. It is believed it was excluded because the vineyard had recently been purchased by an Englishman. In 1924 the Baron Philippe de Rothschild decided to stop selling the wines in barrels, and started to bottle the wines in-house. At the end of the Second World War to celebrate the Allied victory, the Baron commissioned the artist Philippe Jullian to illustrate the Mouton Rothschild label with a big “V” in the middle of it. After a lot of protest and discussion within the Bordeaux market, the estate achieved its First Growth status in 1973. The daughter of Philippe, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took charge of the operations in 1988 following her father’s death. The second wine Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild was created in 1993. Today, the vineyard is overseen by the three Philippine children, who are the now co-owners of the estate.
Mouton-Rothschild is one of the most famous luxury brands in the world. Since 1945 Philippe de Rothschild introduced the tradition of commissioning a different artist each vintage to design the label for the Grand Vin including Miro, Chagall, Picasso, Bacon and Dali.
