Critic Notes
Deep crimson, with aromas of both black fruit and cassis leaf. Supple, juicy, lightish but here there is harmony with enough fruit in the middle to hold the lightish chalky tannins apart. Juicy and fresh on the finish. (JH)

The 2017 Monbrison comes across as a bit compact today. There is good persistence, but the mid-palate is a bit lean. It will be interesting to see if the 2017 fleshes out a bit. The red berry and floral flavors are attractive.

Bragging Rights: 2014 Margaux
In terms of bragging rights our annual tasting at Margaux is very, very, hard to beat. This is the third February (and Bud Cuchet’s fourth) that I have visited Bordeaux and, in particular, visited Chateau Margaux for what is an eye-opening tasting of some of the component parts of the blend of the previous year’s vintage – in this case ...

Chateau Margaux - Ethereal Elegance and Grace
After profiling the three Pauillac first-growths, we turn our attention to the last of Médoc, the heavenly, ethereal Chateau Margaux. Chateau Margaux – A Beautiful Chateau Home to Gorgeous Wines While all of the first-growths have helped shape the history of Bordeaux winemaking, none perhaps has left a legacy quite like that Chateau Margaux. Its stately pavilion is ...

Assessing the blend: 2011 Chateau Margaux
Me: “Paul, are you sure that sample is Merlot, it tastes a lot like Cabernet?” Paul Pontallier: “Yes absolutely it’s a Merlot, amazing eh?” Me: “Paul, are you really sure this isn’t a Cabernet?” Paul Pontallier: “Hmmm, no, not any more. Let me check…” It had started as a simple question in late Nov 2011 when I was at Ch ...

1995: A Bordeaux Vintage Full of Character With Excellent Wines to be Found
A Bordeaux Vintage Filling Out Beautifully Although for a long time in the shadow of the almost uniformly excellent 1996s, the Bordeaux 1995 is full of gems. We’ve been lucky to have sampled several in recent months, from both sides of the Gironde, and the top wines are filling out beautifully with a fleshy richness that was perhaps missing ...
