Critic Notes

The 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot matured in 60% new oak. The harvest was between 26 September and 18 October, and it represents 30% of the total yield. It has a very pure and detailed bouquet with blackberry, briary, cold stone and graphite aromas. This seems to meliorate in glass. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, a Griffons that is nimble and agile, the finish very precise with an almost clinical graphite-tinged finish. This is superb. Apr 2017, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2021-2050

This is a very strong and linear red with blackcurrants, blueberries and minerals. Some mint, too. Full-bodied, tight and polished. Very long. Mar 2017, www.jamessuckling.com

52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot. 60% new oak. Production is 30% of Pichon Baron production. Meant for ageing. Glossy, dark crimson – very dense. Rich and racy and much more subtlety than the Tourelles. Inky finish. Good energy. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2026-2040

One of the highlights of this tasting, the 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron opens with exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics. Deep and flavorful, but also light on its feet and translucent, the Griffons hits all the right notes. Readers looking to sample the 2016 vintage before dipping into the very best wines of the year will find considerable pleasure here. The 2016 is a superb Griffons, perhaps the best since the wine was introduced in 2012. Shades of lavender, rose petal, grilled herbs and succulent black cherry add the closing nuances. The 2016 is a compellingly delicious wine. Don't miss it. Apr 2017, www.vinous.com

This is closer to the signature of the grand vin than that of the Tourelles de Longueville as it comes from soil with a higher gravel content. It represents 30% of production. Beautiful, rich dark purple in colour from a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot, a more classic interpretation of a Médoc second wine than Les Tourelles. This is gorgeous, with a sense of restraint behind the deep, plump fruit. 18 months in 60% new oak reinforces the silky tannins. I like this very much. Apr 2017, www.decanter.com, Drink: 2027-2050

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron gives aromas of tar, sauteed herbs and earth over a cassis and baked cherries core. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and chewy, finishing with an herbal lift. Nov 2018, www.robertparker.com

F+R Opinion
Mark my words here: Pichon-Lalande is an estate to watch. The terroir here and its potential has never been in question.  The 1996 is praised by many as being of first growth quality, and anyone lucky enough to own or have drunk the 1982 will tell you that it is about as good a bottle of claret as one could ...

Blending Masterclass at Chateau Pichon Lalande
Blending is an art form and remains rarely understood amongst us normal wine enthusiasts. The more one thinks about the process and the many variables the more difficult it seems to contemplate. The choices seem endless and the more one tastes the more confusing it seems to get! How can you tell that a certain combination is better than another? ...

A visit from Domaines Barons de Rothschild
This week we were honoured to host our long standing partner Domaines Barons de Rothschild's commercial director Jean-Sebastien Philippe for a very special tasting.... It is not every day that one has the opportunity to taste a line up of wines from all of DBR's Bordeaux properties; in fact even individual tastings rarely take place outside of Bordeaux, so we ...

2011 Barolo: "Intrigante"
Barolo Vineyard Following a vintage like 2010 is not easy.  2010 Barolos are not only of great quality, they were released to a market primed to buy something new, a market disillusioned with Bordeaux, a market looking for quality, value and character.  What the wines of Piedmont offered, and continue to offer is simple: the opportunity to buy, own ...

Barolo 2015: The Growing Season
We are very grateful to Ferruccio Grimaldi for his in-depth 2015 Growing Season Report below, identifying the key events and elements that affected the 2015 vintage... The 2014 climatic trend has brought an important water reserve that has favoured the cycle of the vines throughout the 2015’s vegetative year, especially during the warmest weeks of the year. The total rainfall ...
