This is really lively with searing acidity that works well with the phenolic and ripe fruit to the wine. Dense and exciting. Less than a third of the normal production.
The 2017 Les Champs Libres was picked from 29 August to 2 September according to winemaker Baptiste Guinaudeau (see Lafleur in Pomerol). It has an attractive bouquet with nectarine, white peach and a touch of almond, all very well defined and showing a little more intensity than the Grand Village Blanc tasted alongside. The palate is well balanced with a twist of sour lemon on the entry, fine depth with plenty of energy. There is a touch of sea salt towards the finish with a hint of ginger on the aftertaste, completing what is rapidly becoming one of the benchmark white wines of Bordeaux.
Intense herbal aroma but not unripe, salty citrus, grapefruit purity, orange zest. Super-intense but not just fruity. There's grapefruit and grapefruit pith. Concentrated and full of energy. Creamy and chalky at the same time – complex texture. Incredibly moreish. Mouth-watering freshness balanced by depth of minerally fruit. (JH)
The 2017 Guinaudeau Vignerons Les Champs Libres Blanc, which is produced by Lafleur’s Guinaudeau family, is a serious white that’s up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Based on Sauvignon Blanc and aged in Burgundy barrels, it offers sensational notes of lychee nut, citrus and tart pineapple, with plenty of leesy character, and a medium-bodied, rich, textured, yet clean style on the palate. It’s impressive and I suspect worth following for a decade or more.
There is only one-third of the normal production this year. Composed of 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Blanc has electric intensity and scents of pure mandarin peel, pink grapefruit, yuzu zest and crushed stones. The palate is medium-bodied, very elegant, intense and crisp, finishing long and chalky.
