The third vintage of this remarkable, Loire Valley-inspired white is every bit as good as what preceded it. Stony, chalky and sappy, with a limestone-like frisson, grapefruit and green herbs on the palate and stylish oak. Rich, yet impressively focused and long. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2017-2025
The 2015 Les Champs Libres exudes richness, intensity and brilliance. Fermentation in barrel and less stirring give the Champs Libres striking mid-palate depth and unctuousness, but without sacrificing purity or detail. Champs Libres is built around a core of Sauvignon Blanc (of Loire Valley origins) with a dollop of Sémillon. The interplay of textural richness and bright, salivating energy is compelling. This is super focused and tight with a pintpointed texture and depth. Full and very intense. Loads of dried fruits such as pineapple and mango. 87% Sauvignon and 13% semillion. Mar 2016, www.JamesSuckling.com
The 2015 Blanc (100% Sauvignon Blanc) offers lovely fresh grapefruit, white peaches and fresh pears notes with touches of lime zest and orange blossoms. The palate is medium-bodied, very minerally/chalky and refreshing with great intensity and length. Apr 2018, www.robertparker.com
The 2015 Les Champs Libres (from the Guinaudeau family at Château Lafleur in Pomerol) includes a little Semillon Blanc this year. It was picked between September 5-9. It has an attractive bouquet with lime cordial, dried pineapple and honeysuckle scents that are very well defined. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, vibrant and energetic, the 100% new oak barely noticeable. This is one of the less-known gems from the Guinaudeaus and it comes highly recommended.
