Critic Notes

2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep garnet-purple color and an intense nose of kirsch, warm black currant, mint, chocolate box, cedar and bay leaf. The palate is very full bodied with very firm, chewy tannins and very high acidity. With 16.5% declared alcohol, basically the volume is turned up on everything and it's all a little disjointed at the moment with a long finish that shows the alcohol. I'm hoping this will all knit together with a few years in bottle and then my score will seem conservative, but for now I'm calling it as I see it. Drink it 2012 to 2018+. Kapcsandy's Roberta Reserve - Behind the Bottle
“...could easily eclipse a great vintage of Petrus in a blind tasting.” Robert Parker (on the 2013 Roberta Reserve) Kapcsandy Estate was set up by the extraordinary Lou Kapcsandy, a man who has lived an eventful life prior to becoming one of Napa’s modern-day superstars. At just 17 years of age he fled Hungary during the Communist Revolution of 1956. ...

Understanding Rioja - F+R takes a trip to the Ebro Valley
Rioja is a wine I love, so I was delighted when the team and I had the opportunity to visit the heart of Spain’s most well-known wine region. And reflecting after a few days spent exploring the towns of Haro and Logrono, the wineries of CVNE, Vina Real and Contino and their myriad of mid-harvest vineyards, I grew to learn ...

RHONE VALLEY 2018 VINTAGE INSIGHT
The Rhone Valley has been enjoying a consecutive set of remarkable vintages since 2015. According to Michel Chapoutier, 2018 has continued in the same vein and he describes it as “a terrific year”. Indeed, the Rhone Valley followed a similar path to the rest of France in 2018. A very wet start to the year helped provide plenty of water ...

Napa Valley 2016 & 2017 Vintage Insights
The 2016 Vintage 2016 was undoubtedly a sensational vintage in Napa. Whilst it was the 5th warm vintage in a row, the season had a very wet start, so it was the first vintage in Napa since 2011 not classified as a drought vintage. For many, this brought more finesse to the tannins, more minerality and more balance to the ...

Maya Returns Home to Dalla Valle Vineyards
The Birth of the Cult Wine in Napa Valley The story of Maya is a fascinating one. Widely seen as Napa’s first cult wine, it was catapulted to stardom following the 1992 vintage becoming the second ever wine from the US to be awarded 100 points from Robert Parker. This was a big deal since Parker at that time was ...
