Critic Notes

I haven’t always been a huge fan of the Langhe La Villa (60% Barbera and 40% Nebbiolo) but the 2005 is one of those rare vintages where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Dark cherries, plums, flowers and sweet licorice all flow from this supple, beautifully proportioned wine. Fine, elegant tannins round out the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. With his characteristic modesty Elio Altare told me 2005 was not a great vintage for him. “The harvest had to be timed perfectly, if we had waited just a few more hours the fruit would have been over-ripe,” says Altare. “2004, on the other hand was perfect. We were able to do several passes in the vineyards, picking each bunch at the optimal level of ripeness. In the cellar we did an absolute minimum of racking. The wines literally made themselves.” Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate # 174 Dec 2007

Samuel Billaud - Chablis' Rising Star
Chablis has seen a real renaissance the last few years, with critics such as Neal Martin stating, Chablis “articulates terroir with greater transparency than any other wine region”. He goes on to say “… in talented hands Chablis can satisfy both the senses and the intellect…the finest Chablis wines are uncompromising, challenging and cerebral.” In the same article Neal Martin ...

A New Era for Domaine Billaud-Simon
In 2014 Domaine Faiveley acquired one of the best-known names in Chablis, Domaine Billaud-Simon, amassing around 20 hectares of vineyards in some of the best terroirs in the region. During the takeover, Olivier Bailly stepped in as winemaker taking charge of winemaking from the 2014 vintage and gaining full viticultural control from 2015. Olivier has had some great experience both ...

The FINE+RARE 'Four Decades of Barolo' Dinner
Last week fourteen of FINE+RARE’s customers joined us for a very special dinner at Alyn Williams. The theme: Four Decades of Barolo. We’ve been making as much noise as possible about this region of late, and much of this noise has been focussed on the recently released, and quite brilliant, 2010 vintage.  We thought we’d open a few bottles with some ...

24 Hours in Alsace
Alsace is a unique place. With its chocolate box houses, cobbled streets and its steep rising hills and valleys, it is a beautiful destination. There is much to enjoy aside from the wine, foremost the stunning scenery and the traditional cuisine. The region has some of the highest proportion of Michelin stars restaurants in France and has great cycling routes ...
