Critic Notes

Although Kirwan has been a perennial underachiever, the 1994 and 1995 offerings clearly demonstrate that the estate is coming back to life. The impressively dark ruby/purple-colored 1994 exhibits medium body, good richness, plenty of structure, medium weight, and an overall ripe, concentrated, well-balanced mouthfeel. Combining power and elegance in a pure style, it is a noteworthy effort for Kirwan. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux. Apr 1996, www.robertparker.com

Enticing aromas of cherries, violets and vanilla. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a sweet, fruity, silky finish. Drink or hold. 10,400 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1997

Its stately pavilion is ...

Assessing the blend: 2011 Chateau Margaux
Me: “Paul, are you sure that sample is Merlot, it tastes a lot like Cabernet?” Paul Pontallier: “Yes absolutely it’s a Merlot, amazing eh?” Me: “Paul, are you really sure this isn’t a Cabernet?” Paul Pontallier: “Hmmm, no, not any more. Let me check…” It had started as a simple question in late Nov 2011 when I was at Ch ...
