I like the lift to this wine with stone and mineral character and plenty of blackberries. Medium-bodied, firm and silky. Well done. Mar 2017, www.jamessuckling.com
The 2016 Joanin Becot is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc cropped at 42 hectoliters per hectare between 12-19 October and matured in 65% new oak. It has a very well-defined bouquet with plenty of black cherry fruit, blueberry and a touch of boot polish. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, great volume, a fine bead of acidity and although there is a touch of reduction on the finish, it will be a fine, generous and quite powerful Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux with time. Apr 2017, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2021-2040
Frankly toasted, with a roasted vanilla bean frame around a core of lightly steeped plum and blackberry fruit. A little more reliant on toast than freshness, but solid enough. Apr 2017, James Molesworth, www.winespectator.com
Well brushed coffee and liquorice round out the cherry and raspberry fruit. These are big flavours, full of vigour. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc from limestone and clay soils. Apr 2017, www.decanter.com, Drink: 2020-2032
Dark, rich and chocolatey. Thick and verging on exaggerated right-bank style. Pretty sharp on the end. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2021-2029
The 2016 Joanin-Bécot is a powerful, intense wine, with huge fruit concentration and equally imposing tannins. Scorched earth, leather, smoke, licorice and torrefaction notes give the wine depth and intensity. At times, the 2016 comes across as excessively oaky and overripe. If it settles down, it might merit a more positive note. Jean-Philippe Fort is the consultant. Apr 2017, www.vinous.com
