Critic Notes
This blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Aubert family, who have done so much on the Right Bank with their multiple estates. Dense ruby/purple, rich, chewy, thick, masculine and concentrated, this is a big, extracted Lalande de Pomerol that needs to develop more finesse and complexity. Drink it over the next decade. Jean-Marie Fourrier: Embracing The Future, Preserving The Past
A real highlight on our trip to Burgundy this Autumn was a visit to a producer whom I have admired and collected for many years - Jean-Marie Fourrier. The first time I remember being bewitched by his wines was during the 2011 En Primeur tastings. In such an inconsistent vintage where many wines tasted green and astringent, his range of ...
The Definitive Vertical tasting of Hermitage with Jean-Louis Chave
Spending an evening with Jean Louis Chave to taste through 31 vintages of his Hermitage has to be one of the most memorable wine experiences of my life. Not only was it a fascinating journey through the ages, but the consistency and condition of the wines spanning 70 years was extraordinary. There were two off bottles in the entire line ...
2018 En Primeur Release of Pomerol's Chateau Belle-Brise
The 2018 Bordeaux En Primeur campaign reached new heights this week with the surprise release of one of Saint-Emilion’s top estates - Chateau Angelus. As well as offering a pleasing reduction in price versus their last two vintages, this welcome surprise set the tone for potentially one of the most exciting En Primeur campaigns ever. Last week our first releases ...
2014: THE F+R PICKS. PICHON-LALANDE
Mark my words here: Pichon-Lalande is an estate to watch. The terroir here and its potential has never been in question. The 1996 is praised by many as being of first growth quality, and anyone lucky enough to own or have drunk the 1982 will tell you that it is about as good a bottle of claret as one could ...
