The 2017 Haut-Bacalan has a rich bouquet with fruitcake and raisin-infused red berry fruit that feels as if it is trying too hard. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe black fruit infused with pencil lead and leafy aromas. I don’t find this under-ripe but it is made in a classic style with just the right amount of austerity on the finish. It is well crafted and should drink well for several years.
Deep purplish crimson. Dark fruited, pure and restrained on the nose. Seems quite a shy wine, not shouting, but with a good foundation of fruit and already smooth texture. A little more chewy on the finish, just fresh enough. (JH)
