Castello di Ama’s Haiku slots in beautifully with the overall style of this estate. The Cabernet Franc (albeit only making up 25% of the blend, with 50% Sangiovese and 25% Merlot) offers perfumed aromatics and dense, velvety texture, and the overall effect is ‘Ama’ through and through, with perfect polish and typically impeccable balance of freshness, structure and richness. The nose is lifted with dark fruit, floral perfume and bitter cocoa nibs. Dried herbs and heady violets mingle with earthy leather, sandalwood, green tobacco, fresh plums, cassis, blackberries and black cherries. Brooding and dark, it’s gloriously perfumed, with a lovely peppery freshness – all enveloped in the subtle sweetness and perfect velvetiness of the tannins. This is a fantastic wine, and coming in at a lower price-point, shows Castello di Ama’s generosity with the care that goes into all its cuvées. With the small production (6,000 bottles), this could easily demand a much higher price tag.
