This leads with bright fruit freshness on the one hand and a clear Cabernet Franc austerity on the other hand. The overall structure is tightly knit, but it will soften over time. It has an extremely attractive fruit character and a lovely fresh backbone. A blend this year of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc, located on clay-gravel soils. A Dourthe property. Bright mid crimson. Meaty, gamey nose. Then surprisingly cool. A bit pinched. Spicy sweet but not very appetising. Apr 2017, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2024-2033
The 2016 Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac is a blend of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc and was picked 10-19 October. The nose felt a little blowsy and there was some volatile acidity here that refused to blow off from my sample bottle. Tinned prune notes here suggest that maybe earlier picking would have been advisable. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, candied, vanilla black fruit on the entry, but for me the oak seems disjointed from the fruit and there are dry wood tannins holdings court on the finish.
