The 1961 Ducru Beaucaillou has long been an impressive Saint Julien and here served blind from a bottle purchased directly from the chateau, I have no cause to change that view. This was broodier and more introspective on the nose compared to several others that I have tasted in recent years. Black fruit, black teak and black truffle. However, there is wonderful definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, good body and depth, a little sinew remaining after all these years and therefore, not the most finessed 1961 you can find. However, the substance and persistence in the mouth are very impressive, that long tail of tobacco-tinged black fruit suggesting that it will continue to give pleasure for 20 years easily. Tasted September 2016. Oct 2016, www.robertparker.com
