Tight and linear with a licorice and tar character. Medium to full body and a juicy finish. Mostly cabernet franc. Apr 2017, www.jamessuckling.com

Score: 92-93/100James Suckling

The 2016 Guitard, Simon Blanchard's Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend, offers notable depth. The Franc aromatics are nicely balanced by the natural richness and ripeness of the dark, fleshy Merlot fruit. Scents of lavender, black cherry, mint and sweet spices lead into the pliant, expressive finish. The 2016 was whole-berry-fermented, underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and will see about 50% new oak. Interestingly, Blanchard used 8% whole clusters in the 2016. It will be interesting to see where this wine goes in coming years. For now, there appears to be terrific promise.

Olivier has had some great experience both ...

A Very Social Enterprise: Marco Simonit Visits London's Forty Hall Vineyard
Thursday of this week was a great day to find oneself in a vineyard. The sun was low in the sky on a cold December morning as 35 local volunteers arrived to start the winter pruning. But it was no ordinary vineyard. It was London’s one and only fully-functioning commercial vineyard, found in the outskirts of Enfield at the Forty ...
