One of the most compelling, under the radar wines of the year, the 2015 Denarius is superb. Proprietor Loïc Pasquet lavishes extraordinary care. Organic farming and small lot fermentations in barrel are two of the signatures. Polished and vibrant in the glass, the 2015 offers striking nuance throughout. Dark blueberry, tobacco, mint, cedar and violet notes add complexity in a very pretty, deceptively mid-weight wine endowed with real class. There is a lot to like here, including the vibrant, salivating finish. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, all brought in between October 5 and 15, which was late for the year. Apr 2016,
The 2015 Denarius from Liber Pater comes from the lieux-dits of Barreyre and La Houquette, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot cropped at 15 hectoliters per hectare. It has a rather Port-like bouquet, touches of ground coffee granules percolating through the dense black plum fruit. The palate is smooth on the entry, a little grainy in texture with mulberry and fig notes towards the finish. I would have liked to see more tension and energy in this wine, because it lacks a little spark at this early juncture. Apr 2016,, Drink: 2018-2028
