Mid to dark crimson. Rich, sweet start (very ripe grapes?). Almost right bank-like. Lots of work has gone into this but there seems to be a bit of alcohol on the end. Then some lightly drying tannins but you can't fault the ambition. Apr 2017,, Drink: 2025-2038
A firm and tight wine with plum, earth and berry character. Medium to full body and chewy tannins. Elevage will soften the wine. Mar 2017,
A property that works closely with INRA agricultural research body and Bordeaux's Institute of Wine and Vine Science. This is a name to follow that I have been increasingly impressed with over recent years, and in the 2016 red they are teasing out the balance between plump fruits and the slightly intellectual reserve of the vintage's fresh acidity. I love this for its juicy, luscious fresh fruits. The tannins are chalky, and even a bit chewy right now. Apr 2017,, Drink: 2025-2040
The 2016 Chateau Couhins has a slightly more backward bouquet compared to its peers, but it offers attractive blackberry, black olive and raspberry scents that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is sweet on the entry with juicy red and black fruit tinged with sea salt. My first sample was just missing a little backbone, although a second sample encountered at my final tasting seemed to address that and displayed a much steelier finish. This Pessac-Léognan will need three or four years in bottle, but has the substance to suggest that it will drink well for 15-20 years. Apr 2017,, Drink: 2021-2032
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Couhins features notions of wood smoke, tapenade and tilled soil with warm redcurrants, cassis and wild blueberries at the core. Medium-bodied, it has an elegantly styled palate with plenty of earthy layers and a firm, grainy frame, finishing with an herbal lift. Nov 2018,
