(vinified with 100% whole clusters): Medium red, showing a hint of evolution at the rim. Not quite as primary or precise on the nose as the Pommard Rugiens, offering aromas of redcurrant, red cherry, mocha and underbrush. Supple and broad, conveying a restrained sweetness to its flavors of red cherry, earth and dried flowers. The dusty, palate-coating tannins avoid dryness on the persistent finish. This wine typically opens early, notes winemaker Brian Sieve, but it's not yet really coming alive. I'd hold it for three years. Mar 17,, Drink 2021-2029
The 2014 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi has a lovely bouquet with briary blackberry and a touch of damp earth, well defined and charming. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and good backbone; there is a subtle sea influence here with impressive structure towards the grippy finish that just has a touch of blockiness. || Etienne de Montille was away on one of his many travels when I visited the domaine, but winemaker Brian Sieve was on hand to guide me through both Domaine de Montille and the négoçe label "Deux Montille" (see separate entry for the latter.) "These 2014s have more mineral/saline quality," Brian told me. "In 2014 the growing season was good, fine flowering set us up for a good vintage. If anything, before the hail I was concerned about too much crop for the whites. With respect to the Deux Montille wines, I asked the growers for lees off the press. I want the turbidity to work with the wine in barrel, especially in 2014 where there was beautiful fruit and beautiful lees. I wanted a certain level of matière in the barrel. I need good lees to work with to get the persistence and length. In 2014 there was not a lot of fruit but it was clean." Dec 15,, Drink 2018-2030
The nose opens with a perfume of dusty red fruit and sous-bois. Juicy raspberry, cherry and currants dominate the palate with undertones of wild herbs and fine-grained minerals. Supple tannins are perfectly balanced with ripe acidity that follows into a long mineral-driven finish. Elegant and understated.Dec 2015
