There is no better way to explore the wonderfully varied terroir of Mount Etna than via the Passopisciaro Contrada bottlings – the single-vineyard expressions from Andrea Franchetti’s esteemed winery. This Discovery Case contains one bottle of each of the six Contrada bottlings made at the estate. Each vineyard or “Contrada” is situated at a different altitude, with unique terroir created by past eruptions. Tasting the six Contrada bottlings side by side is a fascinating exploration in how soil and altitude can impact wine’s texture, taste and aroma. The G is incredibly complex and style-wise sits somewhere between the finest Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a top Pinot Noir from Burgundy – along with that volcanic smokiness, so distinct to Etna’s wines. The wine is beautifully scented with old rose, violets, lemon zest and sage. On the palate it is rich in red strawberry fruit and pepper spice. There is a great density to the wine, which is mouth-filling, precise and full of energy. The S, by contrast, is lighter on its feet and ethereal. It is highly perfumed with cut-flower aromas and the Etna smokiness is more subtle. The tannins are the finest of the collection, lightly grainy and densely concentrated. The finish is wonderfully energised – distinctly saline and mouth-watering. The R is more compact and slightly closed, but hints of fresh leather, orange bitters, lapsang souchong and strawberry fruit show there is plenty waiting to unfurl with a bit of bottle age. The tannins are again very fine, dense and there is a good energy to the wine. The C is the most tannic and structured of the wines with distinct negroni-esque chinotto, woodruff and blood orange notes and a real peppery spiciness to the palate. The P has a more refined texture, with lifted floral and darjeeling tea aromas matched by more savoury, fresh leather notes and bramble fruit. The PC Chardonnay is wonderfully refreshing. The wine has a melon and peach fruit profile, alongside a lovely, smoky, mineral tone. The vibrant acidity is beautifully balanced by the lees-y, creamy mid-palate and a moreish, mouth-watering finish. This mixed case contains six (75cl) bottles: the five Nerello Mascalese Contrada bottlings (S, G, R, C and P) and one Chardonnay (Contrada PC).
