This is really excellent. Deep and rich with a beautiful depth of fruit and silky tannins. I am excited about this one. Big upgrade in quality. Apr 17,
A wine of total sensuality, the 2016 Clos Saint Martin offers notable depth and creaminess, with no hard edges and terrific overall balance. There is an almost Pinot-like purity to the fruit in 2016, but above all else, the wine stands out for its impeccable balance and overall harmony. This is a compelling Saint-Émilion from proprietor Sophie Fourcade.
Enticing plum cake and blueberry reduction notes have a warm, fleshy feel, but this stays grounded, with anise and graphite flavors buttressing the finish. Good latent grip too, with a buried chalky edge. Apr 2017, James Molesworth,
Located between Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse and Beau-Séjour Bécot on the plateau in hard limestone territory. This has stunning intensity, with a real salinity on the finish. Lovely, powerful, but austere right now, this will age well. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% aged in clay amphorae that allow for fruit-focussed maturation. Apr 2017,, Drink: 2025-2040
The 2016 Clos St Martin has a very opulent and powerful bouquet with layers of kirsch, crème de cassis and a tang of seaweed. The palate is sweet and chewy on the entry. There is a lot of new oak here that lends it a smooth sheen, although I find it too domineering towards the finish where I wanted to see more fruit. Hopefully, that will be addressed during the barrel maturation because this could be a great Clos St Martin. Just a little prudence here would not go amiss to contain that powerful Merlot.
