Average Score 91.5

Very well done for the appellation this year. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a chewy finish.
The 2017 Clos Saint Julien comes from the limestone plateau in the lieu-dit of Guadet and is a small cuvée from proprietor Catherine Papon-Nouvel (owner of Petit Gravet Aîné). An equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 100% new oak rules the roost at the expense of terroir expression and as a consequence it just feels predictable and generic. Whilst I have enjoyed recent vintages, albeit with the caveat it needs time in bottle, this is one whereby I would have dialed down the new oak because it feels way too domineering on the final half and feels out of proportion to the fruit underneath. This is an exclusivity of Jeffrey Davies on the US market.
