This is wine from a perfectionist and one of the most conscientious, small estate owners in Bordeaux, and Beyney’s 2013 reflects his meticulousness. Its opaque purple color is followed by a glorious nose of strawberry and black cherry liqueur intermixed with licorice, lead pencil shavings and vanilla. It has soft tannins and medium to full body, which is atypical for this vintage, and well-integrated acidity, give this wine a stunning intensity and overall purity. This is a beauty, and has to be tasted to be believed. This is one of the superstars of a vintage where there are not many.||This small, 10+-acre property in the hamlet of Sarpe, northeast of St.-Emilion, is owned by Jean-Claude Beyney. I often have referred to his wines as those made for readers with 19th century tastes. Massive, uncompromising behemoths were the rule of thumb here, but recent vintages, which have been much softer and more fruit-forward, have played into giving his wines a much more forward character, so tasters can actually see the charm and potential that exists from this property. The 2013, harvested October 4-12, from ridiculously low yields of 5 hectoliters per hectare, is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Only 2,000 bottles were produced from about 10 acres of vineyard. The wine may also have the highest level of potential alcohol of any 2013, pushing 15%. Wine Advocate.August, 2014
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Clos de Sarpe has a very pretty, floral-laced nose of roses and violets with a core of red and black cherry preserves plus notes of mulberries, spice box and fragrant soil. Full-bodied and packed with generous red and black fruit layers, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and a long, refreshing finish. Only 2,000 bottles were produced because of the strict selection.
