This shows a beautiful balance of fruit with licorice, blackberries and hints of mineral. Just a touch of plum jam too. Full body, silky tannins and a gorgeous finish. It's drinking so beautifully now. Fabulous. A blend of 65% carmenere, 22% cabernet sauvignon and 13% malbec. Aug 2014,
A big step up from 1997 for me. Wonderful colour and an edge of meat extract on the nose. Definitely more savoury than either 2000 or 1997. Spreads across the palate like a society creep (I wrote under the hot Chilean sun). Lots of structure. Ink and life and density. Most impressive. May 2002,
Once again, arguably the best wine in Chile is this beauty from what may eventually become recognized as a world-class site for red wines—the dry-farmed, old-vines Apalta Vineyard. Fermentation involving big wood vats and the utmost in human attention yields a pure, stately wine that's equal parts power and finesse. Blendwise, it's mostly Merlot, and the flavors are all about kirsch, plum liqueur and chocolate. Give it several years to fully blossom. Mar 2002,
Crammed with fruit, this raspberry confiture-scented red oozes blackberry, raspberry and cassis flavors, with a well-integrated dose of sweet toast. Crushed velvet texture and a long, powerful finish complete the package. This seductive wine should easily convert any nonbelievers. Carmenère, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2008. 1,500 cases made. Mar 2002,
The outstanding, saturated dark ruby-colored 1999 Clos Apalta is produced from the Rapel Valley's oldest vineyard, from which it takes its name. As with all viticulture in dry land farming areas, this vineyard was irrigated for years. A problem prevented it from receiving water a few years ago, and Alexandra Marnier-Lapostolle and her team quickly realized that the vineyard no longer needed to be irrigated, as the old vines' roots had reached deep enough into the ground to find water. Its raspberry liqueur, cherry, and blackberry aromas are followed by an immensely concentrated, well-balanced, and powerful character. This full-bodied wine captures the taster's palate with wave after wave of sur-maturite-laced red and black fruits. It is a broad-shouldered, intense wine for drinking between 2005 and 2015.
